Now famous people are regraded as role models by young people. Do you think this is a positive or negative influence?
Now, more than ever, celebrities especially those that are members of the entertainment industry are looked up to as role models by the teens. With the convergence of social media tools, the lives of celebrities are well documented by the media and in turn the attitudes and lifestyle habits of celebrities have a great deal of power in shaping the ideologies, and behavioural tendencies in adolescents. Essentially celebrities possess the power to positively or negatively influence the lives of the youngsters.
Celebrities who promote a positive self-image and ethical behavior, can have a positive effect on teenagers by setting a good example of how to live and act. Some of these promote social justice and participate in relief efforts when disasters strike while others are involved in humanitarian efforts such as fighting social injustices, raising money for sick or injured people, supporting relief efforts when extreme weather damages a community, contributing financially to hospitals or hosting free events to support philanthropic efforts. For example, people like Oprah Winfrey and Charlize Theron have created social programs, academies, and philanthropic projects. These celebrities are great examples of inspiring role models and have a tremendous amount of positive influence on adolescents.
While there are certainly some positive role models for teens among today’s celebrities, there are also many who provide a decidedly negative influence. With celebrity role models such as Lindsay Lohan, a repeat drink driving offender and Miley Cyrus who was filmed smoking marijuana, teen development is at risk of heading in the wrong direction. As teenagers are still forming their identity, they are more vulnerable to the negative influences that the lifestyle of these celebrities portray. Teens who try to emulate these celebrities may fall victim to several different issues, including but not limited to reckless behaviour, low self-esteem, eating disorders such as dysmorphia, drug and alcohol abuse or  addiction.
Therefore, although celebrities could have positive influences on teens, one should not underestimate the negative influences that celebrities have on our society. Ultimately, it is up to the parents and the matured society to educate teens on how they should respond to celebrity behaviour.
